Today’s first picture is of the Good Ship Sesame which has changed very little in its time at the park. The ship overlooks Big Bird’s Rambling River and has a bridge that walks through the ship and crosses over the river as well.
The next picture is of a now retired walk-around character, Thomas
Twiddlebug (Papa Twiddlebug). The Twiddlebugs, originally Sesame StreetMuppets, are now CGI animated characters but still appear on TV to this day.
The next picture is a shot of the shallower of several ball
pits that used to be at Sesame Place. Ball pits were all the rage in the 80’s
and 90’s and have definitely waned in popularity over time. Count’s Ballroom at
Sesame Place was a much deeper version complete with a several-step ladder one
would find in the deep end of a swimming pool. This may be the original Count’s
Ballroom that later was renamed as part of Big Bird’s Court. The one shown
below appears to be about only 2 feet deep.
Take note of the Sesame Place team member costume, slightly
different than those seen from the first few seasons of the park and that differs very little from today's team member costume as well.
And last but not least, our sendoff picture from our 1993
trip to Sesame Place, a quick stop at Mr. Hooper’s Emporium, Sesame Place’s
only gift shop the year in which this photo was taken. I’m not sure if this
large Big Bird still exists, but at the time I sure was happy to be taking a
picture in front of it. The stuffed animal I’m holding is clearly not a
purchase from this trip but I’m sure I was excited to be surrounded by Sesame
Street toys and games nonetheless.
Mr. Hooper’s Emporium, located at the middle of today’s Sesame Place, used to be located just outside the former entrance to Sesame Place of yesteryear. Finders Keepers, a more recently built gift ship, now stands at the new entrance to the park. More on that in another post!
Tomorrow we’re hitting the Pennsylvania Turnpike, heading towards Harrisburg, and making our next stop at Hersheypark circa 1993! Be sure to stop by!
